Neurotoxins

Neurotoxins, such as Botox®, work by temporarily relaxing the muscles in the face that cause dynamic wrinkles for a subtly refreshed appearance that can improve your whole face. All have been in use for cosmetic and medical indications for decades, and their safety and efficacy are well established.

Neurotoxin Treatments

Botox® is a simple, non-surgical treatment that uses purified proteins (also found in soil and honey) to temporarily reduce or eliminate frown lines, forehead creases, crows feet near the eyes and thick bands in the neck. These purified proteins block the nerve impulse to the muscle that cause wrinkles to form while giving the skin a smoother, more refreshed appearance.

• FDA approved
• Lasts up to 3-4 months
• Painless 5 minute procedure
• Usually can start seeing results in 5-7 business days

Dysport® is very similar to Botox®, the original Botulinum toxin A treatment for wrinkles. However, recent studies have indicated that it may be more effective for certain types of wrinkles, like crow’s feet.

• FDA approved
• Lasts up to 3-4 months
• Painless 5 minute procedure
• Usually can start seeing results in 3-5 days

The difference in Xeomin® is that it does not carry the proteins that are typical of the other products. The potential advantage lies in the lessened likelihood of antibodies being formed to the proteins which – for a very limited number of patients – can render the product ineffective. (This typically is only seen in patients who have used botulinum toxin for an extended period of time.)

• FDA approved
• Lasts up to 3-4 months
• Painless 5 minute procedure
• Usually can start seeing results in 1-3 days

Like Botox, Jeuveau® has a molecular weight of 900 kDa, but they’re produced in different facilities and are derived from different strains of the same toxin. (Botox, or onabotulinumtoxinA, is made by Allergan in Westport, Ireland; Jeuveau®, or prabotulinumtoxinA, comes out of Seoul, South Korea.) The risks and potential side effects listed by the companies are also identical.
